Many people make the common mistake of calling a dolphin a “porpoise.” However, dolphins and porpoises are in two separate families, so they are not the same thing. What are some differences? First of all, dolphins have sharp, pointy teeth, but porpoises have rounder, more “stubbier” teeth. Also, a porpoise’s head is quite small compared to the rest of its body, but a dolphin’s head appears to be sized perfectly.
To make things more confusing, there is a behavior commonly seen in dolphins called “porpoising.” Porpoising is when a dolphin makes a shallow leap out of the water.
